PhotoMeDAS: A smart solution for cranial deformation in infants based on head modeling

PhotoMeDAS HeadShape. A smart solution for cranial deformation in infants based on head modeling for techtransfer

Cranial deformities are a prevalent challenge in pediatric consultations, as they can lead to increased intracranial pressure, abnormal brain growth and neurodevelopmental problems. Assessment is typically performed using methods such as calipers or tape measures, which provide quick and low-cost results, but usually offer very limited information. This is a problem because accurate evaluation and early detection are essential. Techniques such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or 3D scanning are also used for the diagnosis. These are expensive and require resources and facilities, time-consuming radiation exposure scans may require sedation or anesthesia. Additionally, ionizing radiation may cause harm to newborns.

In this context, researchers from the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV) and the Health Research Institute La Fe (IIS La Fe) have developed a smartphone system for assessing cranial deformities based on an accurate personalized head 3D reconstruction, in minutes.  PhotoMeDAS HeadShape is a photogrammetric system for head 3D modelling and evaluating cranial deformation primarily in infants. This smartphone-based system consists of an app, a coded cap (Fig. 1), a 3D software and a website (Fig. 2).

The technology holds a Spanish Patent Application in shared ownership between the UPV and the IIS La Fe; international extension applied to USA, EU, Canada and Australia.

Benefits:

  • User-friendly tool.
  • The device does not require the patient to remain still.
  • Personalized helmet can be easily derived from the head 3D model.
  • Millimetric accuracy for iOS and Android devices.
  • Fulfills all the requirements to be considered as a medical device by the EU MDR and FDA 510(k).

The represented institution is looking for a manufacturer that leads to a commercial exploitation of the presented medical device.
